Halftime: September 2024
Welcome to Halftime, a (hopefully) monthly installment of my recommendations of cool albums you may not have heard of. Some of these I haven’t talked about before and some are things you can find on my “unsung classics” list on RYM if you’re curious. Happy listening!
lucas v - bunnies (2024)
What I’d hoped MJ Lenderman’s Manning Fireworks sounded like. Instead of merely mining the 90s GOATs, lucas v is adept at creating weird little twisted worlds of his own.
FFO: Polvo, Truman’s Water, bulldog eyes, Duster
Nymb - Novembre EP (1998)
Actually does rip Sunny Day Real Estate pretty hard, but man when you sound this good I can’t even be that mad. This is peak “Is it Emo?” music.
FFO: Sunny Day Real Estate, The Promise Ring, Everyone Asked About You, Texas Is The Reason
Thomas LaRoche - ever more precise accounts of the cave (2023)
Influences include “Heroin Use, Ether, God and Devil and Cosmic Superimposition book by Wilhelm Reich, Neil Diamond, Porcelain Eggs and Various Phosphates”.
FFO: Prurient, Coil, Yellow Swans, sleep paralysis
Bovine Over Sussex W - Tombola: An Introduction (2003)
An album designed to make you feel like you’re traveling through radio frequencies. Wildly underrated for how inventive it is.
FFO: Tortoise, Toshimaru Nakamura, early Boards of Canada, the KLF
The Holocaust Click - Solo Tape (1993)
FFO: Three 6 Mafia, Red Dog, Kingpin Skinny Pimp, Shawty Pimp
Harry Case - In a Mood (1989)
Ethereal boogie from a man who never got his flowers while he was alive, being resurrected as a quasi-mythical figure who played the instruments himself on this record.
FFO: Lincoln Olivetti, Patrice Rushen, Evelyn King, Herbie Hancock
Yoga'n'ants – Bethlehem, We Are On Our Own (2007)
Picture-perfect French pop from Japan, with twists and turns throughout. Sunny outdoor listening recommended.
FFO: Serge Gainsbourg, Francoise Hardy, Lamp, Citrus
Maximo Park - Our Earthly Pleasures (2007)
Not underground at all, this landfill indie released on Warp for some reason. The riffs and songwriting are breezily charming, mid-2000s FIFA bliss.
FFO: Art Brut, Arctic Monkeys, Kaiser Chiefs, We Are Scientists
CARRIER - PRE-MILLENNIUM WITCHCRAFT (1995 - 1998)
Super dank liquid d&b. Jungle’s mysterious, trench-coated cousin.
FFO: LTJ Bukem, DJ Oblique, Demdike Stare, Kemistry & Storm
Mongo Skato - Active Intent (2021)
One of the most underrated techno artists living for about 10 years now. New Zealand has that guy.
FFO: Model 500, Kassem Mosse, Drexciya, Maurizio
Thanks for reading! Hope you find something you enjoy :)
