Halftime: April 2025
Welcome to April’s edition of Halftime by yours truly. I hope you’ve been doing well, and sorry I beefed doing last month! The first edition of Constantly Hating live was last month and I’m eternally grateful to everyone who came and to my beloved readers. Here’s good music to soothe the soul.
Nemo - In Stereo (1999)
Pretty blatant Hum ripoff but not sure whether I’m saying that since they’re the more famous band. In any case, still a cool space rock record.
RIYL: Hum, Failure, Clutch, Spiritualized
King Kooba - The Imperial Solution (1998)
9 fucking moais.
RIYL: 4hero, LTJ Bukem, A Guy Called Gerald, 9 fucking moais
All Girl Summer Fun Band - 2 (2003)
Not that obscure but I don’t see anyone talk about them anymore, which is criminal. They were such a cool counterpoint to the Riot Grrl movement, fun and self-effacing in a way bands rarely are anymore.
RIYL: Beat Happening, Go Sailor, Tiger Trap, Pavement
I Never Knew You – End Of Seasons (2010)
That good early 2010s post-hardcore. Freshman year me would’ve made a shrine to these guys.
RIYL: Pianos Become The Teeth, Saetia, Darkest Hour, Suis La Lune
Azalea - An Apparatus For The Lack Thereof (2002)
Speaking of middle school throwbacks, wow, what a find. Corny and hard in all the best ways, these breakdowns are crunchy.
RIYL: August Burns Red, Protest the Hero, The Used, Botch
Minimum Chips - Portfolio (1994-1998)
Stereolab pastiche—but who can’t get enough of that? I kid, this Australian gang was more than that, excellent weirdo indie pop that probes and pokes at your brain.
RIYL: Stereolab, Serge Gainsbourg, Moin, Dummy
The Prima Donnas – Drugs Sex & Discotheques (2001)
If indie sleaze revival was like this I’d enjoy it a lot more. Gay as hell and super fun.
RIYL: Mindless Self Indulgence, Suicide, Scissor Sisters, The Unicorns
Orquesta de las Nubes - El orden del azar (1985)
Just lovely minimalist ambient. Good speakers or headphones recommended.
RIYL: Nuno Canavarro, Laurie Anderson, Yoko Ono, Steve Reich
Malaria! - Emotion (1982)
Pounding German new wave, like living in one of those oblique Soviet cartoons. It’s raw as hell.
RIYL: The Soft Cell, Public Image Limited, Kraftwerk, Nena
Rooftops - A Forest Of Polarity (2008)
Despite the goofy song anagrams, this is fire math rock. Really charming with some great hooks and riffs.
RIYL: 3nd, Tera Melos, This Town Needs Guns, Don Caballero
Thanks for reading, I hope you enjoy these recommendations. If you enjoy Constantly Hating, drop me some cash on my Ko-fi. Much love.
